5 Things Every Social Media Video Needs

Create attention-grabbing videos that boost your business.

Short-form videos (like TikTok videos and Instagram Reels) are a powerful way to connect with and grow your customer base … but only if you can hold their interest. Social media is flooded with an infinite amount of content competing for people’s attention. For your videos to have their desired impact, you have to keep viewers engaged.

Here are five essentials to keep customers from scrolling past your videos:

Before you pick up your camera, think about what this video needs to achieve. What value proposition are you offering viewers? What do you want them to take away? Don’t post for the sake of posting … make sure each video delivers content your customers need.

Did you know you have less than three seconds to capture attention on social media? To catch viewers’ eyes, you need a hook … a short statement that piques interest and stops them from scrolling. Here are some examples of hooks:

  • Before you do [task or goal], watch this:

  • [X] mistakes you are probably making when you ___ [situation or activity].

  • You don’t need ___ [item or product] to ___ [desired outcome].

  • This mistake can cost you ___ [general dollar value].

  • Three things you never knew about [X].

  • Stop scrolling if you want to ___ [action or topic of interest].

You might be surprised at how little time you have to keep a viewer’s interest. Ideal video lengths range from 10 to 15 seconds (TikTok), 30 seconds (Instagram), 15 seconds to one minute (YouTube Shorts), or up to three minutes (Facebook, LinkedIn). Keep them short and appropriate for their intended platform.

What do you want viewers to do after they watch your video? Should they check out your website? Download a free guide? Share the video with a friend who needs to know? End your video with that info, so viewers have their next step.

A lot of content is viewed on phones while viewers are killing time or multitasking, which means they’ll have the sound off. You’ll lose those viewers if you don’t have captions.

Of course, to really get some ideas for video marketing, check out what other real estate professionals are doing, and pay attention to the type of content you’re drawn to as a consumer. Before you know it, you’ll be a video pro!
