4 Ways to Make a Strong First Impression

You won’t get a second chance, so make every second count.

In a competitive market, making a positive first impression isn't just beneficial — it's essential. When meeting a potential client, partner, or networking connection in person, the first few seconds can set the tone for your entire professional relationship.

Within the first few seconds of meeting someone, that person will form an impression of your confidence, level of interest, and trustworthiness … and that’s before you even start speaking.

Here’s how to make the most of that initial interaction, as well as the conversation that follows.

Before going into a meeting, take a minute to focus on how you want to come across. Picture yourself being friendly and approachable. Imagine yourself connecting well with others and getting a positive outcome. Take a breath, and check that your head is up and shoulders are back. This will make you look (and feel) more confident.

In this case, your game face is a warm smile and direct eye contact. When meeting someone, raise your eyebrows slightly. This conveys friendly recognition, even though this is a new acquaintance. Observe the other person’s body language, and as subtly as you can, copy it. This is called mirroring, and it builds a sense of connection. Bringing these elements together may feel awkward at first, so practice with a friend until it come across sincerely.

Demonstrate a desire to really learn about the other person by asking open-ended questions. Always thank people for their time, and express appreciation for any other expertise or information they share with you.

Don’t let the above steps interfere with showing your true personality and passions. You can’t authentically connect with someone if you’re pretending to be someone else. Remember: Making a good first impression is about showing the best version of yourself, not a false version of yourself.
